In Washington D.C. wurde ein Mahnmal für die Opfer kommunistischer Regime errichtet. Das Mahnmal ist eine Nachbildung der "Göttin der Demokratie", welche chinesische Studenten bei den Demokratieprotesten von 1989 auf dem Tiananamen-Platz in Beijing enthüllt hatten. Bei der Einweihung des Mahnmals war neben Präsident Bush auch der Repräsentant (also Botschafter) Taiwans, Joseph Wu, anwesend. Die kommunistische Regierung in Beijing ließ nun durch den Sprecher des Außenministeriums, Qin Gang, ihre Unzufriedenheit über das Mahnmal mitteilen.

There are political forces in the United States that still think in ‘cold war’ terms and seek to provoke conflicts between different ideologies and social systems. But this runs counter to the trend of the times and is unpopular.
We ask the U.S. side to give up ‘cold war’ thinking and the practice of making ideological judgments about other countries. The U.S. should stop interfering in the internal affairs of other countries, do more to promote dialogue and cooperation, and take concrete steps to safeguard the constructive and cooperative ties that exist between China and the United States.
